YOU ARE HERE is a piece commissioned by the City of Redmond that invites viewers into the map to view their city and their surroundings in a new way.
The piece is made up of three reclaimed glass windows with wood sashes that each have a different layer of the map, organized from most visible (buildings layer), to the most invisible (pipes, water, and other hidden systems that allow our cities to run smoothly) which are integral yet often not appreciated. Posted playfully on top of the window frame is a brightly colored YOU ARE HERE, a play on a location pin and a reference to retro Americana tourist materials of the 1960s. The piece encourages viewers to further explore their surroundings and rethink the systems that enable the City of Redmond to support its larger living communities and ecosystems.
